HISTORY AT THE DEPOT
The Visitor Centre
The Royal Ordnance Depot at Weedon was one of the largest small arms distribution centres in Britain. Built in 1803 the Army were in place there until it’s military closure in 1965. It was briefly employed as an equipment store before being sold off into private ownership for development and finally used, as today, for many individual local businesses.
The Visitor Centre was set up and opened in 2016 thanks to a grant from The National Lottery Heritage fund and is run as a non-profit charity manned by volunteers. There are many artefacts on display which have either been loaned, donated or found by the local community and which give a fascinating insight into the history of the site and the way it was operated from Napoleonic times right through to the Second World War.
Entry to the Visitor Centre itself is free of charge and Walking Tours of the site, accompanied by our well informed volunteer guides are available by booking, (along with refreshments (if required) for a small fee. To get prices or book, email or call in at the Visitor Centre.
The Visitor Centre is always looking out for new Volunteers. Just 3 hours per week and training given to enable you to pass on knowledge of this historical site. Email the Visitor Centre to find out how to feel part of the friendly volunteer group.
